1. In Section 2 of Chapter 4, the narrator gives an explanation of Bernard's problems. List the things that trouble Bernard. Why do you think Bernard is "much more alone" and "utterly miserable" during the solidarity service in Ch. 5? Do you think Bernard is in any way responsible for his own problem?

Some things that trouble Bernard are his size compared to other Alphas everytime he encountered with lower castes he was reminded of this and it humilated him. He is very self-concious and envious of other Alphas. He is much more alone because he isnt like a normal Alpha. I dont think he is responsible for his own problem, too much alcohol was added to him

Reading Assignment Chapters 4 and 5

4. Why does Gene agree to forego his studies and venture to the tree?

I think Gene goes to the tree because of what Finny says to him. Finny confronts Gene and tells him that he should come to the tree and Gene finally stands up to Finny and says no that he is going to study. Finny finally accepts what Gene says and tells him that if he wants to study he should. Gene is finally respected by Finny and he then goes to the tree to show Finny that he is glad that he cared about what he was doing.
